Students recycled discarded books into amazing works of art based on a theme and incorporating a variety of media. A full LESSON PLAN (WORD) or (PDF) with standards met, ideas, images of professional works, resources and rubric is available here. The lesson was chosen for the 2004 Visual ArtSpark Award sponsored regionally by Young Audiences. More examples will be added as books are completed.

Personal hand designs and tape transfers were the opening page for the books. Thanks to Michal Austin (Kansas) for this idea. |

Maddie's book (above) is a thoughtful look at poverty. Other themes included dance, Harry Potter, sports, the paranormal, natural disasters and New York City. |
The following are some pages from my person reflective journal for "Systems, Strategies and Skills of Counseling and Psychology" graduate class. I chose to alter a children's board book.
These pages are from altered book pages created during a Round Robin (everyone sends their book to the next person to work in it until everyone has work in everyone else's book!!!)

This book is actually a brides guide book. The originator suggested the theme celebrating women (without men). I was drawn to the page about weights and measures and explored the struggle and concerns with the outward views. The scales have 3-D pieces cut from a Diet Coke can. The tin opens to reveal words suggesting complex roles of the inside woman such as mother, wife, teacher, friend.

This book is Pioneering Women and I chose to work in the
chapter "Classrooms and Schoolmarms".
The black square is chalkboard paint. Written in chalk are teachers: my
grandmother, my great aunt and myself!
